Case studies

Receipts, not vibes.

Two real projects. What the client asked for, what we shipped, what happened. Numbers are numbers. If a metric moved because of email, we’ll say so. If it didn’t, we won’t pretend.

Case Study 01 / Prior role · Ecamm

Ecamm

Who they are

Ecamm makes video-streaming software for creators on Mac — a founder-driven brand with a substantial list of makers, podcasters, and streamers. I ran email marketing there before starting Actually Fun Email.

The ask

The list looked healthy on paper but was flat on engagement. Sends were slipping into Promotions, replies were rare, and the team had no framework for turning subscribers into repeat openers.

What we did

Shipped the first version of Dopamail. Public leaderboards through List Gadget, point-scoring for opens/clicks/replies, confetti animations on button clicks, choose-your-own-adventure newsletters, and reply-asking baked into the welcome flow. Built in Kit.

Case Study 02 / Welcome Email · Doc Rock

The Permission Slip

Who they are

Doc Rock is a creator for creators: a livestreaming coach and YouTube educator who teaches people how to go live, look good doing it, and tell their stories on video. His newsletter signup had been quietly collecting subscribers for over a year.

The ask

1,600+ people had raised their hands and heard nothing back. Not one email, ever. The fear was obvious: email a list that cold and watch the unsubscribes roll in. The ask was to break the silence without breaking the list.

What we did

We wrote the first email this list ever received, and instead of asking people to click, we asked them to talk. No apology tour. No “sorry we’ve been quiet.” The email welcomed people in, then gave them an assignment: reply with one sentence about the project you keep saying you’ll start “when it’s ready.” And a promise on the other end: every reply gets read, and answered. It now opens the evergreen welcome sequence, so the replies haven’t stopped.
